14000 PPI, another breakthrough in the field of red Micro LED

In the past two years, the rise of AR and other XR smart wearable devices has accelerated Micro LED technology. With the active promotion of terminal brands and the gradual growth of consumer demand, the Micro LED industry chain has also accelerated its pace in technological breakthroughs and product development. Continue to inject vitality into this field and boost the landing application of the next generation of smart wearable devices.

It is well known in the industry that the main obstacles to the mass production of Micro LEDs include the mass transfer of chips and inspection and repair, the preparation and efficiency of red Micro LEDs, and the problem of full color, etc. In the past few years, the scientific research community and the industry chain have launched comprehensive research on these pain points, and have also proposed feasible solutions at this stage. Recently, another company announced a major breakthrough in the field of red Micro LED micro-displays, laying the foundation for the preparation of full-color solutions.

Mojo Vision develops 14K PPI red Micro LED

On June 28, Mojo Vision announced that it has successfully prepared a red Micro LED microdisplay with a pixel density of 14,000 PPI, claiming that the pixel density is currently the highest level in the industry.

According to reports, Mojo Vision uses its proprietary quantum dot (QD) process to develop a red Micro LED microdisplay with a size of 1.37 μm and a pitch of 1.87 μm, which has high brightness and vivid colors. Mojo Vision claims it is the industry’s first Red Micro LEDs that overcome wavelength and visual challenges through ultra-high pixel density, brightness, contrast, color gamut, and energy efficiency, and achieve true red at a pitch below 2 μm, surpassing the previous record of red light wavelengths of 620nm or above .

Mojo Vision was originally known for developing the world's first Micro LED contact lens, and later shifted its focus and resources to research Micro LED displays earlier this year. Although the business focus has just been adjusted for about half a year, it has published a number of research results so far.

In the field of green Micro LED displays, Mojo Vision actually announced the development of a single green Micro LED with a pixel density of 14,000 PPI a few years ago, and this figure has been increased to 28,000 at present.

In terms of blue light Micro LED, Mojo Vision just announced last month (5/23) that it successfully lit up the first 12-inch GaN-on-Si blue light Micro LED array wafer, and then DigiLens reached a cooperation with it, and the two parties will jointly develop AR glasses based on Micro LED micro display technology.

Today, Mojo Vision has made important progress in red Micro LED, which marks that it is one step closer to realizing high-performance and high-reliability Micro LED full-color micro-displays that meet the needs of AR/VR and other equipment.

Global Red Micro LED R&D Progress in the First Half of the Year

In the field of red Micro LED, major research institutions and Micro LED manufacturers have made progress in different aspects such as materials, epitaxial structure, chip size/structure, resolution, color conversion technology, and external quantum efficiency. As far as this year is concerned, according to incomplete statistics, about 7 research institutions/enterprises have announced the research progress of red Micro LED in the first half of the year.

From the perspective of full-colorization, overcoming the problems related to red light Micro LED is equivalent to speeding up the process of developing full-color Micro LED displays. Applications matter.

In addition, from the perspective of the application prospect of Micro LED in this field, in addition to high brightness, high contrast and full-color display, AR and other devices have other requirements. According to Mojo Vision, in smart glasses worn all day, wearing comfort, visual comfort and social comfort are the three key factors influencing consumer acceptance.

Although Micro OLED can be effectively combined with Birdbath optical design scheme, in addition to the lack of brightness of Micro OLED itself, the disadvantages of this matching scheme include bulky design, which strictly speaking does not meet the needs of end use. The solution of Micro LED with optical waveguide is a more ideal choice in the case of meeting higher brightness and realizing lightweight and miniaturized design.

With the advancement of technology and the reduction of cost, the arrival of full-color Micro LED microdisplay will be accelerated, which will help the next generation of smart wearable devices enter the mass consumer market. (Text: LEDinside Janice)
